23rd Annual Women of Color Day at Penn Celebration
On March 5, 2010 I had the honor to represent President Amy Gutmann in welcoming the honorees and participants of the 23RD Annual Women of Color Day at Penn Celebration.
Twenty-three years ago 65 women came together in what became the first Women of Color Day at Penn. That small group created for the first time at Penn a forum for women of color to meet and draw on one another’s experiences and strengths in celebrating their community.
This wonderful annual event recognizes and honors the work of the next generation of women of color leaders. I, along with the women and men of Public Safety congratulate this year’s Women of Color awardees: Wendy De La Rosa, Gabrielle Banks, Valerie Johnson, and Jettie D Newkirk.
The Keynote speaker for this year’s event was Ms. Denise Brown, Executive Director for the Leeway Foundation who shared her thoughts on the intersections between poverty and social inequalities including health, crime, housing, and educational disadvantage, with a particular focus on the impact to women.
Through the legacy of the group’s pioneers, this tradition of celebrating the achievements of women of color continues 23 years later.
